3 Steps to Clean Your Makeup Bag for Spring
With no harmful chemicals in sight!
Spring has officially sprung! With a new season ahead, you may be wanting to flex your Marie Kondo-style muscles with your current stash of beauty products.
Just like your style and beauty routine, the contents of your makeup bag should also change with the season. Whether it looks like your go-to winter makeup products are bulging from the seams or has already exploded within, there are reasons aplenty to clean out expired makeup products for more seasonally appropriate color and textures!
If you can’t fight the urge to purge any longer, read on to discover our 5 steps to clean your makeup bag for spring!
1. Dump everything out and assess what you’ve got.
Unzip that makeup bag bulging with your go-to winter makeup products—organic eye makeup palette, liquid eyeliners, lip & cheek makeup products and more—and dump it all out! Categorize everything from makeup to skincare products on large, white towel so you can have a clearer overview of all the makeup products you have, like those drying liquid lipsticks in nearly indistinguishable shades of red that you haven’t used in two years and possibly more.
Use this general guideline to assess which makeup products you should be saying sayonara to:
- Lipstick: 2 years
- Gel/pencil/liquid eyeliner: 6 months to 1 year
- Mascara: 3-6 months
- Liquid foundations and tinted moisturizers: 1 – 2 years
- Powder makeup products: 1-2 years.
2. Clean out your makeup
A makeup bag jammed to its seams with makeup products is the perfect breeding ground for harmful chemicals and unwanted bacteria—particularly if you haven’t given it a good clean through colder months. For an organic and natural cleaning method, you can mix two cups of distilled or boiled warm water with one drop of organic and natural castile soap, as well as four drops of an organic and natural essential oil of your choice. Organic and natural lavender or lemon essential oil is particularly great for their antibacterial properties. Clean out your makeup bag with this nifty concoction and you’re ready for the next step. You can even use it to give your brushes a quick cleanse from all the makeup product gunk build-up, too!
3. Adopt a more sustainable, organic and natural beauty
Lastly, while you’re at it, scrutinize those ingredient lists and identify any commercial, non- organic and natural beauty products with harmful chemicals that you can most certainly do without. There’s no need to toss all of them into the bin immediately—slowly replace them with fully vegan, organic and natural beauty product alternatives as you run out. Take this opportunity to explore vegan, organic and natural makeup product alternatives made with edible beauty ingredients and no harmful chemicals — and your body, skin and the planet will thank you!
